As a unique take on familiar iconography, this series explores the versatility of illustrated beauty when poetically paired with classically styled grotesqueness. The resulting imagery exudes a peculiar yet comfortable polarity. The stable balance of complementary emotions facilitates an overall haunting allure. This characteristic imagery reaches a visual apex in the series grand centerpiece, Dysmorphrodesia: a work that is nearly 8 ft in height and the oeuvre's largest to date. Also noteworthy is the refined nature of each piece when compared to earlier work. Notice a dramatic increase in technique, skill, and meaningful use of color, as well as a marked change in philosophical exploration.
2006 - 2008
Predominately characterized by a surrealistic subset of ideology known as "magic realism", this extensive and creative art suite exhibits a much more literal use of symbolic imagery than the diametric poetics of Hellscapes. Two statements are at work here; a social commentary that exploits the bland, repetitive nature of self-imprisoned modernity and an exploration of the literal definition of the two dimensional image. The black void that claims the role of setting for the comically dark subjects especially lends meaning to the latter artistic statement. It is clear that certain questions about young adulthood are unconsciously being addressed and in hindsight, these as well as some illustrative struggles, although frustrating and worrisome at the time of execution, are somewhat charming in their naivety. All said, Suburban Dehumanization revels in tact, whereas Hellscapes enjoys the relaxation so often associated with artistic maturity.
